How to set up multi-factor authentication in Vantagepoint

Important Note:  Multi Factor Authentication cannot be assigned to the administrative user who is currently signed into Vantagepoint and who is setting up this authentication. It would be ideal to keep at least one administrative user NOT using Multi Factor Authentication (MFA.)  This type of authentication uses TOTP (Time based One Time Password) which is a temporary passcode, generated by an algorithm. TOTP is typically used in authenticating access to computer systems; it stays on the screen for a certain length of time and can only be used once.

Resolution: 

1. Log in to Vantagepoint.
2. Navigate to Settings/Security/Password Policies.
3. Check the “Enable Multi-Factor Authentication using TOTP checkbox.
4. Press “Save.”
5. Log out of Vantagepoint.
6. Log in to Vantagepoint as the Administrator.
7. Navigate to Settings/Security/Users.
8. Click on the drop down for users and select the user.
9. Check the Multi-Factor Authentication checkbox. You will see a popup that states “User was successfully saved.”
10. Log out of Vantagepoint.
11. Log in to Vantagepoint as the identity that was setup for Multi-Factor Authentication and press the Log In button.
12. You will be presented with the setup screen for Multi-Factor Authentication.
13. Press “Set Up Multi-factor Authentication”.
14. Go to your device and start your multi-factor authentication app. Scan the bar code. 
15. The new user will appear in the list.
16. Press the green key beside the username. This will provide you with an authentication number to enter.
17. Go back to Vantagepoint and click on “Done with Setup.”
18. You will be presented with the “Done with Multi-factor Authentication Setup” window. Click on the “I’m sure” button.
19. Enter your 6 digit code and press the Log In button.
20. This will start the authentication process and will log you in.

 

Logging in After the Multi-factor Authentication is Setup:

1. Go to the Vantagepoint Log In screen. 
2. Enter the password and press the Log In button.
3. You will be presented with the Multi-factor authentication Log In screen. 
4. Use your device and your Multi-factor authentication application to generate your 6 digit key. 
5. Enter the key and press Log In.
